Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed the public's concerns regarding air travel safety following two recent fatal plane crashes . In an interview with 'The Ingraham Angle' on Monday, Duffy, a former FOX Business co-host, underscored that air travel remains the safest mode of transportation in the United States. He emphasized that if the airspace wasn't deemed safe, the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) would promptly shut it down.
Duffy acknowledged the devastating impact of the crashes, expressing that while air travel is statistically the safest option, these incidents are unacceptable and require immediate attention.The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is actively investigating the causes of the recent crashes, including a collision between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet near Reagan National Airport late Wednesday night. Duffy stated that the NTSB prioritizes safety above other considerations, such as environmental, social justice, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.His comments follow President Donald Trump's suggestion last week that DEI hiring practices might have contributed to the crash, a claim that lacks evidence. Investigators continue to gather information and seek to provide answers to the victims' families. Duffy highlighted the issue of staffing shortages within the FAA, attributing it to a significant loss of air traffic controllers during the COVID-19 pandemic. He outlined a plan to address this shortage by rapidly deploying additional air traffic controllers, including utilizing expedited hiring processes. He also stressed the urgent need for upgrades to the country's aging air traffic control system, a matter he believes should have been addressed decades ago.
