About 20 people were taken to a hospital after a transit bus hit train tracks and overturned in Lancaster.
Injuries were reported Wednesday when a transit bus carrying children crashed and overturned after striking railroad tracks in Lancaster. The crash was reported at 11:18 a.m. on Sierra Highway near W Avenue C when the bus lost control and hit the train tracks in the area, the California Highway Patrol said.
The Metrolink transfer bus ended up on its side next to the railroad tracks.Among some 40 people who were on the bus, all of them were hurt, suffering from minor to major injuries. An 8-year-old boy was in stable condition after being transported from the scene in a medical helicopter, according to CHP officer Jordan Church.“Our current understanding of the crash is perhaps the driver was not able to get off the gas potentially,” Church said. The city of Lancaster said the railroad tracks were damaged where they were struck by the bus, and authorities notified Union Pacific and Metrolink, both of which use the tracks in the area. This is the first time CHP has seen an accident of this severity in the valley, Church said. “We've had many school bus and transit bus crashes in our jurisdiction here in the Antelope Valley, but one with this many passengers, this many injuries and the way that the crash happened, this is definitely one of the first for us,” he said.
