How we graded each of Auburn's transfers in the 2025 season
Auburn didn’t build the entire roster through transfer portal last offseason, but Hugh Freeze and the former staff used it to fill a number of holes on offense. The Tigers signed eight offensive transfers, and seven of them were either starters or significant contributors at different points in 2025.
Auburn had a rough year offensively as a team, so it’s hard to give a high grade to the offensive transfer class.Singleton was the highest-ranked signee in Auburn’s 2025 portal class and getting his signature felt like a big win. On3 and 247Sports both ranked him as the No. 1 receiver in the portal at the time. He was a staple in the offense immediately, leading the team in receptions. His production was down slightly from his previous season at Georgia Tech, but he still finished with 58 catches, 534 yards and three touchdowns. Singleton didn’t become an elite or All-American player at Auburn, but he was still a vital part of the offense, earning him a solid grade.. He came to Auburn after a frustrating season at Oklahoma, but the hope was that his potential would be fulfilled on the Plains. Arnold started Auburn’s first eight games, but was eventually benched in the Tigers’ win over Arkansas and never regained the starting job. It wasn’t all Arnold’s fault, as protection issues and a dysfunctional system overall held him back under Freeze. He finished the season with 1,309 yards and six passing touchdowns, while adding 311 rushing yards and eight more touchdowns. Arnold wasn’t put in a good situation at Auburn, but he still struggled to make the best of it, which earns the low grade.Daniels didn’t arrive on campus until near the end of the summer and started the season behind Arnold and Deuce Knight in the pecking order at quarterback. Despite that, he eventually became the starter, starting three of Auburn’s final four games.Outside of the Vanderbilt game, Daniels’ numbers don’t jump off the page, but he seemed to steady the offense near the end of the season. His play wasn’t elite, but it was solid enough to earn a B. Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels runs for a touchdown during the second half of an NCAA college football game against Vanderbilt, Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, in Nashville, Tenn. Chaplin was another one of Auburn’s most talked about transfers last offseason, but didn’t quite live up to the hype. He was an All-ACC Honorable Mention at Virginia Tech in 2024, but struggled early on at Auburn. Constant false starts plagued him early in the season, along with a few rough games in pass protection. Chaplin seemed to pick things up later in the season, though, and switching to a more mobile quarterback seemed to help the offensive line. Chaplin didn’t quite live up to expectations, but his play later in the year keeps his grade from being too low.Murphy joined Chaplin as one of two transfer offensive linemen who played right away. Coming from USC, he had Power Four starting experience that gave the group more options at tackle. Murphy struggled in pass protection though, giving up 32 pressures and 10 sacks on the season. He was forced to change positions later in the year after starting center Connor Lew tore his ACL, and was solid in what was a brand-new position to him. Murphy’s versatility made him valuable to this offensive line, but some of his issues in pass protection make it hard to give him a much higher grade.Fields’ season is hard to grade, as he missed Auburn’s final eight games after breaking his foot. Before that, he was a reliable target for Arnold at the beginning of the year. In those four games, Fields caught 12 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. His best performance came against Ball State, when he caught six passes for 51 yards. Fields could have helped Auburn’s offense down the stretch if he stayed healthy, but he now plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens in January.Howard had a tough season at Auburn after transferring in from Maryland. He became a consistent part of the offense, but drops kept him playing to his full potential. As Brandon Frazier dealt with injuries for most of the season, Howard continued to get opportunities, despite the drops. He never seemed to take advantage, though, finishing with just 10 catches for 84 yards. Howard had opportunities to be a breakout player at Auburn, but his mistakes seemed to keep that from happening. His athleticism gives him potential if he can clean up the drops, but it’s hard to give him a passing grade for this season. It’s hard to give a grade to Robinson since he only played in four games after an injury derailed his season. He was third on the depth chart before his injury, and missing two months during the middle of the season made it nearly impossible for him to move up.Peter Rauterkus is an Auburn Sports Reporter for AL.com covering football, basketball and all things Auburn sports.
