CANTON, Ohio - Multiple agencies are currently on the scene of a HAZMAT situation in Canton after a train car carrying over 150,000 lbs. of butane began to leak, according to authorities.

Canton Fire Chief Stephen Henderson says the train car, which contained approximately 150,425 lbs. of butane, started leaking the butane around 2:21 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1.The Canton Fire Department and HAZMAT have isolated the car and are trying to offload it, which Chief Henderson says will take approximately six hours.

At approximately 1:00am this morning a privately owned rail car loaded with butane was found to be leaking in Gambrinus Yard, Canton, OH. The car arrived at W&LE’s Gambrinus Yard from the Marathon Petroleum facility immediately adjacent to Gambrinus Yard. The rail car was stationary when the leak was discovered and no derailment occurred. The Stark County hazmat team and the local fire department are on scene and monitoring the situation.
