A US Airways plane carrying figure skaters, coaches, and family members returning from the U.S. national championships crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with a helicopter near Reagan National Airport. All 67 people on board are feared dead.

A devastating plane crash near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday evening claimed the lives of all 67 people on board, including figure skaters, coaches, and family members returning from the U.S. national championships. The American Airlines flight collided with a Black Hawk helicopter shortly before 9 p.m., sending the aircraft plummeting into the icy Potomac River . No survivors were expected, officials confirmed on Thursday.

Among the victims were 14 figure skaters, six of whom were affiliated with the Skating Club of Boston. Doug Zeghibe, the CEO and executive director of the club, identified the deceased skaters as Jinna Ha and Spencer Lane, along with their mothers, Jin Han and Christine Lane. He also named coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, a pair who won the World Championship in 1994. The U.S. Figure Skating organization confirmed that 'several members' of the skating community were aboard the flight, which departed from Wichita, Kansas. The organization expressed its deepest condolences and stated that it would continue to monitor the situation. Emergency response units searched the crash site throughout the night, but the conditions hampered recovery efforts. The Mayor of Wichita, Lily Wu, offered her condolences during a press conference, describing the tragedy as a heavy blow to the city. Russian media reported that two Russian figure skaters were on board the flight, and the presidential spokesman expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The crash brought back painful memories of a previous tragedy in 1961 when an entire U.S. figure skating team perished in a plane crash.
