A Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet collided near Ronald Reagan National Airport, resulting in the deaths of all passengers and crew on the plane and all soldiers on the helicopter. Investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

An Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet collided Wednesday night near Ronald Reagan National Airport , resulting in a tragic loss of life. The accident claimed the lives of three soldiers aboard the helicopter and 60 passengers and four crew members on the jet. Passengers on the flight, originating from Wichita, Kansas, included a group of figure skaters, their coaches, and family members returning from a development camp following the national U.S.

Figure Skating Championships. Officials confirmed Thursday that there are no survivors, with at least 28 bodies recovered. The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, a widely used military helicopter, was on a training flight when the collision occurred. The helicopter, designated PAT25, based at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, carried three soldiers, described by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as 'fairly experienced.' They were conducting a required annual night evaluation, wearing night vision goggles. Flying a Black Hawk involves intensive training, demanding pilots to manage multiple controls simultaneously while navigating challenging terrain. Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Darin Gaub, a veteran Black Hawk pilot, likened it to 'a master class in multitasking,' requiring split-second decision-making. The American Airlines Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ700, was cleared to land on a shorter runway shortly before the collision. Air traffic control audio reveals the controller instructing the helicopter to wait behind the jet after inquiring if it had the plane in sight. There was no response, and seconds later, the catastrophic collision occurred. The plane's wreckage was found upside down in three sections in waist-deep water, while the helicopter's debris was also discovered. This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about helicopter safety, with a series of Black Hawk training crashes in recent years. Since 2014, at least 12 fatal Black Hawk crashes have resulted in the deaths of 47 service members, some linked to 'spatial disorientation.' In response to an increase in accidents, the Army implemented additional safety measures in 2023, including reinforcing pilots' awareness of their aircraft's position relative to the ground. The investigation into the cause of this collision is ongoing
