Thousands of fans at the Sheffield Arena on Saturday witnessed the tragedy, with widespread reports suggesting that the player suffered a serious cut to his neck from a skate.
The Elite Ice Hockey League said it was "heartbroken" to confirm the news, adding that all games scheduled for Sunday had been postponed. The league's statement added: "Many of us will have found Saturday’s events very distressing. Please take care of yourselves, and each other." Sheffield had been leading the Panthers 2-1 when the game was stopped after around 30 minutes, with the Nottingham Panthers first reporting at 8.23pm that there had been a "bad injury." Within the next few moments, the club then announced that players were returning to the locker rooms and later confirmed: "Fans have been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency.
