Anyone hoping to get back to the Bay Area from Tahoe is in for a very long drive Sunday, and local officials are asking people to delay travel, if possible. As of late Sunday morning, Interstate 80 is closed in both directions from the Nevada state line to Colfax, and state Route 267 is closed from Northstar to Kings Beach. It’s slow going on Highway 50, which is the only main thoroughfare open around Lake Tahoe. Shortly before 11 a.m., it’s taking drivers more than 5.5 hours to drive from Homewood to San Francisco; on a clear day, that drive usually takes a little over three hours.
“Roads are extremely treacherous in the Truckee area!” CHP’s Truckee division wrote on Twitter. “Travel is highly discouraged!” I-80 remains closed from Applegate to CA/NV Stateline. Snow's still falling. Route still caked with ice. Snowplows working double time, but as you can see moments ago one was barely made a dent in the snow-covered roadway in Kingvale.
