As he entered the Forbidden City, Senator Farrell said he was "very privileged to be invited here to this iconic site". Former prime minister Tony Abbott was given a tour of the landmark while in office in 2014, and then-prime minister Julia Gillard visited in 2011. Han Yang, a former Chinese diplomat now living in Sydney, told the ABC it was a "very high-level welcome from Beijing".
