Tropical storm watch now issued for parts of Dominican Republic as Fiona nears. The warning still holds for Puerto Rico. Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for Puerto Rico, with treacherous conditions associated with Fiona expected to batter parts of it with fierce winds and torrential rain Saturday into Sunday, potentially triggering deadly mudslides there and in the Dominican Republic, which could see up to 16 inches of rainfall, the National Hurricane Center says.
As of the NHC's 2 p.m. Friday update, Fiona was about 75 miles east of Guadeloupe and moving with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center. Gradual strengthening is forecast over the next few days. A westward motion with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected through early Sunday, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest and northwest later Sunday and Sunday night. On the current track, the center of Fiona is expected to move across the Leeward Islands Friday night, near or just south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Saturday into Sunday, and approach the southern coast of the Dominican Republic Sunday night and early Monday.
