CBS’s Tracker has become one of the network’s breakout hits — an action-driven procedural with a surprising amount of heart. Based on Jeffery Deaver’s novel The Never Game, the series follows Colter Shaw , a self-reliant survivalist and “rewardist” who travels across the country solving mysteries and finding missing people for cash.
Using his razor-sharp tracking skills, Colter works alongside a small support team that once included business handler Velma Bruin , who helped keep his chaotic operation in order. But by the time Tracker’s third season premiered in October 2025, both McEnany and Eric Graise had quietly left the show. The exits, confirmed by TVLine and Deadline over the summer, caught fans off guard — especially after Velma had already weathered the loss of her on-screen wife, Teddi , in Season 1. Why Abby McEnany Left 'Tracker' Although CBS did not explicitly clarify McEnany's departure, its decision appears to be more of a creative move than a scandal. In interviews with TVLine and Us Weekly, showrunner Elwood Reid said the writing team wanted to narrow their focus to Colter's perspective and avoid turning Tracker into a procedural"phone-a-friend" scenario. “I don’t want the show to be phone-a-friend every week,” Reid said, noting that the series works best when it follows Colter’s lone-wolf dynamic. Hartley, who also serves as executive producer, reportedly pushed for a more streamlined structure, wondering if he had to call a specific character in a particular scenario every time. Reid also explained that Season 3’s shift gives Fiona Rene’s character, Reenie Green, a more defined role. “With more characters in the office, we can tell other stories and build out what her world looks like when she’s not helping Colter,” he said. That narrative pivot meant phasing out Velma and Bobby — two characters who, while beloved, were less central to the series’ new creative direction. How 'Tracker' Explained Velma’s Absence Tracker’s Season 3 premiere, “The Process,” wastes no time clarifying what happened to the missing members of Colter’s team. In a brief exchange, Reenie tells recruit Randy that Velma “went to go see Teddi” and is “trying to save her marriage.” It’s a fitting, emotionally grounded sendoff for the character — one that honors Velma’s story without resorting to melodrama. Bobby’s departure, meanwhile, is chalked up to a career move. He’s “killing it,” Randy tells Reenie, having landed a lucrative encryption job at a startup. Both exits fit naturally into the show’s grounded tone, offering closure while leaving the door open for potential returns. Velma’s exit also completes an arc that began when Weigert’s Teddi left the series after Season 1. The two had anchored Colter’s off-screen operation, handling logistics, finances, and the occasional jail bailout. Their absence now pushes Colter — and Reenie — into new territory, forcing the show’s remaining team to evolve. According to Reid, fans shouldn’t count Velma out entirely. In a September 2025 interview with TV Insider, he teased that while there are no immediate plans for McEnany’s return, “there’s a possibility” down the line. “Right now, in this first block, no,” he said, “but never say never.” That optimism fits the tone of Tracker, a series that thrives on loose ends and open roads. If Velma’s story does resume, it would likely be tied to Colter’s growing circle or Reenie’s expanding legal practice — both of which are taking center stage this season. What’s Next for 'Tracker'? Even with the changes in the cast, Tracker is still doing well. It remains one of CBS's top-rated dramas and has consistently been in the Top 5 among both linear and streaming viewers. What makes the show special is a combination of action, mystery, and emotional storytelling, which audiences gravitate towards — similar to what we saw way back in Seasons 1 and 2 of Person of Interest or The Mentalist. In Season 3, Colter and his brother Russ are starting a new case while also dealing with the trauma of their father's death — something that only complicates Colter's already layered external and internal dilemmas.
