For the first time since 1984, someone else could sit atop the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Follow along as LeBron James creeps up on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s leading point total this season
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at No. 1 on the NBA’s all-time career scoring list. Coming into the 2022-23 season, James is 1,325 points behind Abdul-Jabbar and has averaged just above 1,950 points per season in his career.
Abdul-Jabbar has sat atop the NBA’s all-time career points leaderboard since April 1984. That same year, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley were among the top five draft picks, and both the Kansas City Kings and New Jersey Nets were among the teams calling names. Before Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain held the points title for nearly 20 years.
Abdul-Jabbar’s career points total sits at 38,387 . James is at 37,062 points: His career points per game through 19 seasons is 27.1, and though his points-per-game average peaked in his 11 seasons with the Cavaliers, his average across the last four seasons with the Lakers is slightly higher than in his time with the Heat.
