Tracee Ellis Ross opened up about the aftermath of her empowering 'childless women' speech on Friday and her hair care line as she accepted Byrdie’s inaugural “Muse Award” for Pattern Beauty.

As Ellis Ross accepted Byrdie’s inaugural Byrdie Muse Award on Friday night, she chatted about the aftermath of her speech, which has since made its way around social media. She was quick to weigh on all the “childless women” headlines that have sprung up since her viral appearance. “There were other things I said other than just what is going viral,” she toldbeauty director Lauren Valenti at the event. “I believe in democracy. I believe in the future of this country.
However, Ellis Ross–who’s previously opened up about the “incredible” life she’s built without children–said that discourse from Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance about the Democratic party being full of “childless cat ladies” without a “direct stake” in the country” really hit a nerve.There has been a dialogue happening recently that I've had a lot of frustration with for many reasons,” she said.
For Ellis Ross, this idea of pushing boundaries and “naming” things she wants to see comes through with Pattern, which celebrates Black beauty through an array of offerings for curly, coily, and tight textures. “I think similar to Pattern, I really have a desire to continue naming into the world what I want to see,” she says, calling her hair-care brand “a celebration of texture” as opposed to the “narrative that has been present before around solving a problem.” For the actress, part of that includes embracing slicked-back styles, including a surprisingly easy slick-back updo,” which she shared with, she brushes out her curls with her shower brush, pulls them back, and puts them in a towel to dry.
