Toyota and Kenworth unveiled a new hydrogen-powered truck and said they will build 10 of them to be used in and around the Port of Los Angeles
and then a third, which was unveiled yesterday, on Earth Day. The test trucks have proved themselves worthy enough that Toyota and Kenworth will build ten examples to be used in and around the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Heuneme as part of a new zero-emission delivery"Shore-to-Store" project.
The project is being funded in part by the California Air Resources Board, which gave the Port of LA $41 million as part of its Zero and Near-Zero Emissions Freight Facilities Project. ZANZEFF uses cap-and-trade dollars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the Class 8 hydrogen trucks are going to be used to move freight all around the Los Angeles. With a range of over 300 miles, the trucks should not have a problem reaching planned destinations in Inland Empire or Merced.
Beyond the vehicles themselves, two new heavy-duty hydrogen fueling stations will be built as part of the Shore-to Store Project. One will be in Wilmington, California and the other will be in Ontario, California. That will bring to five the number of station heavy-duty hydrogen fueling stations available for H2 trucks in the Los Angeles basin.
It was appropriate that Toyota and Kenworth will deploy the first of these trucks in LA, since,"It was the Port of Los Angeles' vision of a clean port initiative that initially introduced Toyota to the idea of heavy-duty fuel cell technology," said Bob Carter, Toyota Motor North America's executive vice president of sales, during the debut event at the port.
