Could you imagine taking a 2005 Toyota Echo and an engine from a 2016 Toyota Prius and building a track car? Well, someone did and with glorious results.
. It is certainly unconventional but when van der Haas explained his reasoning to us, it was a genius idea.
He picked up the Prius engine from a junk shop for only $400, leaving the electric motor and all the hybrid components behind, taking just the 1.5 liter combustion mill which is a modified version of the Toyota 1NZFE engine. That means aftermarket parts are plentiful. The rest of the build is made up of what van der Haas refers to as"abandonware." For example, the set of Rays Engineering wheels on his Echo only cost him $120 since their 14 x 6 size is a fit that"no one wants." The same goes for the semi-slick tires he bought second hand for a low price since their size is generally undesired in his locale. He got his coilovers as payment from a friend for helping them tune their car.
