The Gauteng government has resolved to direct 60% of its R34 billion goods and services budget towards supporting township initiatives
During the state of the province address on Monday evening, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi said that the legislature had adopted the Township Economic Development Act, which was a blueprint on how government would support township businesses and fund them. He said they wanted the act to migrate from paper to practice.
The premier said that a digital database, the township business register, of all businesses in townships was being established.Spaza shops were not going to be left out, he said. “We are told that our spaza shops are struggling because they don’t have collective buying power.
All major sporting and government gatherings would now be held in townships to support their economy, he said. “We are proud that, after 11 years, this year’s Gauteng Sport Awards were held in the township of Soshanguve and they were a major success. This initiative boosted lots of township business.”The Gauteng government was also upscaling the formalisation and upgrading of the township rental market, or backroom properties, as part of injecting vibrancy into the township economy.
“I am pleased to announce that 2 000 applications have been validated for funding for aboMastandi, and 40 loans have been approved to the tune of R50 million, which has the potential to create employment. We want to ensure the timeous lodging of zoning applications and direct collaboration with municipalities on the delivery of this project of back yard dwellers.”
