Tove Lo's visual for “2 Die 4”—and the spirit of her upcoming fifth album, “Dirt Femme”—takes cues from the very best of the early-’00s.
Thankfully, when the first song on the album, “No One Dies From Love,” arrived in May, it immediately put to rest any concerns that Lo’s new chapter would focus solely on her newfound marital bliss. A thunderous, tears-on-the-dancefloor pop banger gently recalling Lo’s fellow countrywoman Robyn, the song is a gut-wrenching elegy to heartbreak, centered around the lyric: “No one dies from love / Guess I’ll be the first.
At the album’s center, however, is the dichotomy expressed in the title; namely, how Lo has learned to embrace her femininity during her 16 years in the boy’s club of the music industry, and appreciate the strength it brings. “I think a lot of it came after the #MeToo movement,” she says of her new take on womanhood. “In so many situations at the start of my career, I was the only girl in the room. It affected me in ways that at the time, I didn’t really pick up on.
