The world's best riders are set to vie for overall victory in the 111th edition of the Tour de France.Newly crowned Giro d'Italia winner Tadej Pogačar is due to take on Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel – both of whom are currently returning from injury – and Primož Roglič.In the first Grand Départ for Italy, the race starts in Florence and traces a path east across the country, before heading back west towards France and into the Alps.
The riders will also take on the Apennines, Massif Central and Pyrenees mountain ranges, and pass through Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France. The race will be live on SS Variety 1, Variety 1 Africa and Maximo 1 for the entirety of the Tour. The route of the 2024 Tour de France covers a total of 3497.3 kilometres with some 52 320 metres of overall elevation.
There are eight flat stages and so eight sprint opportunities but the likes of Mark Cavendish, Jasper Philipsen and their teammates will have to fight hard for each one.The list of contenders is topped by Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar, who have dominated the last four editions, with each winning the French grand tour twice.Pogačar – if he wins – will achieve something that hasn’t been done in more than 25 years.
Behind the two riders, several others, the likes of Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel are competing to either pull off a major upset or stand beside them on the podium in Nice three weeks later.
