The Minns government will implement harsher penalties, including an 11-year jail term, to curb rising violence against retail workers in New South Wales.

The landmark reforms will outlaw three new offences on Wednesday in response to the staggering increase in violence while on the job.

Offenders who cause physical harm to employees could face a maximum sentence of six years imprisonment, while offenders who cause grievous bodily harm will risk a maximum 11 year jail term. The NSW government said the move was part of an election promise to implement better protections for retail workers."There is no excuse for assaulting anyone, particularly not someone who is doing their job," Mr Minns said.

Minister for Industrial Relations and Work Health and Safety Sophie Cotsis said the laws would act as a deterrent for anti-social behaviour towards staff who are trying to provide a service. “I’ve heard first-hand from retail workers who have experienced terrible abuse which has affected their working life, this legislation signals the government’s support for our workers and their safety.”
