Touching Base: San Antonio Missions win first-half title in Texas League South
Ed Bailey 2022The San Antonio Missions will play in the postseason for the first time since 2018, securing the first-half title in the Texas League South with Friday’s 11-2 win against the Wichita Wind Surge.
The Missions’ offense led the league with a .273 batting average and .362 on-base percentage during the first half. Playing at the pitcher-friendly Wolff Stadium, San Antonio learned to manufacture runs, topping the league with 111 steals — 19 more than second-place Northwest Arkansas — while hitting a league-low 58 home runs.
He had largely struggled before his time away from the team, hitting .234 with 43 strikeouts across 111 at-bats from the start of the season through June 3. “The talent is there. It’s always been there,” Wellman said. “We told him, ‘Just be yourself. Don’t try to do more than you can do. Go be yourself.’ I think he’s starting to settle in.”
