Dame Andrea Jenkyns, a longstanding critic of Mr Sunak and one of only two MPs to openly call for his ousting, played down the prospect of a leadership challenge, instead arguing for a Cabinet reshuffle and change in policy direction to win back voters. As results rolled in on Friday, a spokesman for the Conservative Britain Alliance, an anonymous group of Tory donors thought to be involved in leadership plotting against Mr Sunak, toldA Tory former Cabinet minister meanwhile suggested Ben Houchen hanging on for the party as Tees Valley mayor would help shore up Mr Sunak’s position.
“It means they’ve alienated any residual centrist Tories without convincing Reform-leaning voters to come back,” the insider added.
