Moderate leadership contender accused of political 'opportunism'
Priti Patel is expected to announce her candidature by the weekend, with Tom Tugendhat and Robert Jenrick have already declaredhas been branded “opportunistic” and “continuity Rishi” just hours after party grandees warned rivals to avoid personal attacks during the contest.
Tugendhat has already come under fire from supporters of rival campaign teams following his claim that he would leave the ECHR in order to reduce illegal immigration, having previously staunchly opposed such a move.: “It’s a weird move because he will alienate his core vote in the party. Everyone had him down as liberal, Remain-y Tom and now they don’t know what to think. He looks opportunistic.”
“I am prepared to leave the ECHR, or indeed any other institution that doesn’t serve the interests of the British people.”
