Sajid Javid and Nadhim Zahawi face questions over tax arrangements
Tory leadership candidates have come under sustained questioning over their former tax arrangements, sparking concerns the issue could derail efforts to become prime minister.yesterday refused to give details about which jurisdictions he has previously paid taxes in, prompting further speculation as to whether his tax status allowed him to reduce his tax burden in the UK.
Mr Javid, who is bidding to replace Boris Johnson in a crowded field of Tory candidates, insisted that he had always been “transparent” with the tax authorities, but questions over his former tax status overshadowed the launch of his leadership bid. Asked which countries he had been domiciled in for tax purposes, Sajid Javid said: “I’m not getting into any more detail [on] my personal tax affairs that were to do with a time that I was not in public life.”
He revealed earlier this year that he held non-domiciled status before entering politics. Mr Javid has vowed, along with fellow leadership hopeful Jeremy Hunt, to publish his tax returns should he become prime minister.
