Reminders to stay safe: Go to the basement or a small interior room such as a closet, bathroom, or interior hallway without windows on the lowest level. If possible, get under something sturdy, or use a mattress, heavy coats or a thick blanket to protect yourself from flying debris.
A Tornado Watch means conditions are increasingly favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the coming few hours, so now is the time to review your tornado safety plan in case a Tornado Warning is issued — which occurs if a tornado has been detected on radar or visually confirmed.
If a Tornado Warning is issued, a basement is the best shelter option. However, if one is not available, go to an interior room on the lowest floor of whatever building you are in. Do not rely on outdoor sirens for a Tornado Warning. Keep your phone charged with its volume up and respect a Tornado Warning if it comes to your phone. If you have a weather radio, be sure that it is on and set to alert.
