A tornado that devastated multiple communities in Illinois and Indiana was more than a half-mile wide and traveled more than 30 miles, officials say.

According to an estimated storm track released by Thursday by the National Weather Service, the tornado touched down at approximately 6:18 p.m. Tuesday evening in Kankakee. It traveled more than 36 miles and tore a path through the city, as well as Aroma Park and well into Indiana, leading to two fatalities in Lake Village.The tornado was estimated to have been at least 1,000 yards wide, or more than 3,000 feet, and was classified as an EF-3, with peak wind speeds estimated at 150 miles per hour. The twister tore through neighborhoods in Kankakee and Aroma Park, damaging or destroying dozens of homes and leaving 11 people injured. The tornado crossed the Kankakee River multiple times and crossed Interstate 57 as it moved east, according to officials. Here are preliminary track maps from the tornadoes that we have confirmed from Mar 10. This information is still very preliminary as we continue to analyze satellite, drone, & additional survey information. There'll be modifications to this information in coming days.It eventually reached Indiana and hit multiple locations in Lake Village, leading to the deaths of an elderly couple before it lifted from the ground in Jasper County. A separate tornado track was released for a twister in Jasper County, which was estimated as an EF-1 tornado packing estimated wind speeds of 110 miles per hour.The tornado was again more than a half-mile wide, and was on the ground for 10.3 miles, leading to three injuries. The National Weather Service is continuing to look into Tuesday’s severe weather event, and will update information as it becomes available.
