The University of San Diego watches Saint Mary's score early, late and often on the way to 17-8 defeat that sends defending champion Toreros home early

The University of San Diego spotted Saint Mary’s four runs before it even took a swing Wednesday night in the West Coast Conference Tournament.

A play-in game victory last year fueled USD’s run to the 2022 WCC Tournament title. The Toreros exited on the tournament’s opening day this year, seeing their season end with a 24-25-1 record.Wednesday’s winners advanced from the play-in round to the double-elimination main bracket. Robinson couldn’t make it through three innings Wednesday before USD signaled the bullpen for reliever Conner Thurman. Robinson allowed six runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

Saint Mary boosted its advantage to 8-2 in the fourth on first baseman Christian Almanza’s two-run homer off Thurman.
