Torchwood writer Phil Ford calls the Doctor Who universe 'so huge,' saying it's big enough to warrant a revival of the spinoff Torchwood.
Torchwood writer Phil Ford speaks positively of the revival chances of the Doctor Who spinoff. Existing in the same universe as and borrowing some of its characters from the 2005 iteration of Doctor Who, the spinoff Torchwood ran originally from 2006 to 2011. Doctor Who continued its season well after Torchwood ended, and will have its next season this year, starting Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Torchwood’s Ford hints that Gatwa’s upcoming Doctor Who stint is not the only Doctor Who story that needs expanding. As Ford tells RadioTimes, he has “always wanted to see more done with UNIT.” Though has “no idea what is going on in the great man’s mind,” Ford believes that the Doctor Who universe is expansive enough to warrant a Torchwood sequel. Check out Ford’s full quote below:
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY "I've always wanted to see more done with UNIT. I’ve always thought there’s stuff we could do with UNIT there. And, of course, I think there’s every case for bringing back a version of Torchwood. But the thing about Doctor Who is the universe is so huge over all these years, over 60 years, there’s so many places you could go to to develop spin-offs. But I honestly have no idea what is going on in the great man’s mind so we’ll have to wait and find out.
The institution of Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor would also likely delay production of a Torchwood revival. Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies, who aided the meticulous rollout of Gatwa’s casting announcement last year, alongside the rest of the Doctor Who creative team will likely be focusing their efforts on ensuring a smooth transition of Gatwa’s first season. This could further delay progress on the Torchwood revival that Ford imagines.
The widespread excitement over Gawta’s Doctor Who casting as well as for the 60th anniversary special, however, show that Doctor Who viewers are hungry for more content. If the new Doctor Who season receives high ratings, perhaps the Doctor Who creative team will rally to expand the universe with a Torchwood reboot or spinoff world. For fans who share Ford’s enthusiasm for his Torchwood creation, there may still be hope.
