Chief scientific advisor admits there is 'low confidence' that pupils won't spread virus with UK schools set to reopen

A CHIEF scientific advisor for the Government admitted that there is a 'low degree of confidence' in evidence suggesting that children cannot transmit Covid-19 any less than adults.

But that a growing body of evidence had suggested children were much more likely to suffer much mild or noThe Government outlined plans this week for children to be able to return to nurseries, and for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils to be back in school, from June 1 at the earliest.to reopen school with the UK biggest union, National Education Union , urging members not to engage with the plans until the government has issued more advice.

"There are some studies which suggest that they might transmit it less than adults but this evidence is mixed, it's quite early and so there is a low degree of confidence among Sage currently in the evidence which suggests that they might transmit it less." Mr Rahman responded: "That was not a departmental decision. That was a Cabinet decision following advice from Sage via the Government's chief scientific adviser and CMO."His comments came after an alliance of education unions called on the Government to "step back" from its plan to reopen schools from next month.
