The interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle Sassoon, resigned following orders from the Justice Department to dismiss a case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The case, which accused Adams of accepting illegal campaign contributions and bribes, was dropped to allow Adams to focus on President Trump's immigration agenda and his reelection campaign.
The top federal prosecutor in Manhattan resigned Thursday after a senior Justice Department official directed New York prosecutors to drop a case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams . Danielle Sassoon , the interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, stepped down following a memo from acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove that ordered the dismissal of the case against Adams.
The memo stated that the case should be dropped so that Adams could assist President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown and campaign for reelection. Adams had been accused of accepting illegal campaign contributions and bribes in the form of discounted travel from individuals seeking to influence him. 'I never broke the law, and I never would,' Adams asserted in response to the news. 'I would never put any personal benefit above my solemn responsibility as your mayor.' He maintained throughout the case that he was innocent and had never asked anyone to break the law on his behalf. 'No witness ever came forward publicly to make claims against me,' he added, referencing threats of new charges and evidence that never materialized. Sassoon, a former clerk for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and a member of the conservative Federalist Society, was not the original prosecutor on the case against Adams. Damian Williams, the former U.S. Attorney who brought the charges last year, resigned after Trump's election victory. Sassoon had only been appointed as acting U.S. Attorney on January 21, the day after Trump took office
