UNC is moving fast after firing Hubert Davis, as early candidates begin to take shape in the Tar Heels' coaching search.
Up 19 points in the second half against VCU, UNC looked like it was cruising. Instead, it unraveled, missing shots, defensive breakdowns, and ultimately falling 82–78 in overtime in what became the largest comeback in first-round tournament history.
That loss accelerated a decision that had been building for days amid donor pressure, internal meetings, and growing skepticism about the program’s direction. By Tuesday night, the uncertainty was gone. Davis, who went 125–54 in five seasons with a national title appearance in Year 1, was out. This is a full-scale, swing-for-the-fences search, with a mix of NBA power and elite college coaching pedigree.Norlander notes how there’s skepticism about whether he’d leave the NBA ecosystem, especially given he could land virtually any pro job if he wanted. But the key detail here is that Stevens hasn’t ruled out coaching again. And UNC, with its blue-blood status, is compelling enough to at least make the call. Then there’s Billy Donovan, a two-time national champion at Florida with deep college roots. Norlander reports Donovan would at least be open to discussions, which alone puts him firmly in the mix. From there, the focus shifts to active college coaches, including Arizona's Tommy Loyd, Michigan's Dusty May, and Iowa State's T.J. Otzelberger. Loyd is one of the fastest risers in the sport, known for elite offensive systems and international recruiting pipelines. May, meanwhile, is a proven tournament tactician with Final Four credibility and a modern roster-building approach, and Otzelberger is a renowned culture-builder who’s turned defense and toughness into a winning formula in Ames. Secondary names like Nate Oats and Todd Golden have surfaced, but they’re viewed as a tier below the initial targets.UNC has historically hired “Carolina family” ties, from Dean Smith to Roy Williams to Davis. But this search signals a potential philosophical shift. For the first time in decades, the Tar Heels may go outside that lineage in pursuit of innovation, NIL-era adaptability, and sustained postseason success. However, with the transfer portal active and recruiting cycles in motion, UNC can’t afford a prolonged search if it wants to stabilize the roster and retain key pieces.
