TopGun: Maverick features an 'epic' theme from former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. 'They wanted me to make it sound epic. I was like, sure, okay, I can do that!'
Guitarist Johnny Marr has revealed that he helped craft an “epic” new theme song for Top Gun: Maverick. The highly-anticipated film is the sequel to the classic 1986 action film, which starred Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer as US Air Force pilots. The Tony Scott-directed original is a cult classic 80s hit, and a sequel has long been rumored. Top Gun: Maverick sees Cruise return over thirty years later in a new adventure from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
Marr, who rose to fame as the guitarist of 80s indie sensation The Smiths, is no stranger to film scores. Since embarking on his post-Smiths career, the 58-year-old Brit has collaborated several times with film composer Hans Zimmer, who is composing for Top Gun 2. Marr joined Zimmer’s Magnificent 6 along with Pharrell Williams and several others to craft the score for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The two music legends recently worked together again on the latest 007 flick No Time To Die .
I’ll tell you, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this anywhere yet, but I don’t see why not. Almost by accident, I guess did the theme to the new Top Gun [Top Gun: Maverick]. I think there was some issue with how the theme was sounding, and I was around and I have a guitar. It really was as simple as that. I haven’t seen the movie in its entirety. I didn’t do the score, I just played the theme. [...] I was presented with the thing and they wanted me to make it sound epic.
With the several release date delays suffered by Top Gun 2, the film becomes more and more hotly anticipated. Microsoft recently delayed an expansion for its virtual Flight Simulator, which was set to allow users to play as Maverick in his iconic jet, in order to match the new release date. It was recently revealed that Cruise’s original co-star Kilmer will in fact make a return in the new movie, which was a welcome addition for fans of the first movie.
Marr’s track record both with The Smiths, and as a film musician with composers like Zimmer, makes for an exciting prospect for the new Top Gun. The original theme is a beloved and classic piece of film soundtrack, but with the sequel’s apparent dramatic tone and epic story, the music itself needed to adapt to match that tonal shift. Fans will be eager as ever to finally sit down and see the action movie when it finally releases. Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27. .
