Jun, the highly anticipated restaurant from 2022 “Top Chef” finalist Evelyn Garcia and chef/co-owner Henry Lu, is getting ready to spice up Houston.
, the catering company and Southeast Asian-inspired condiment line Garcia and Lu created in 2020 after Garcia’s Kin Asian food stall closed when Politan Row dining hall in Rice Village failed in 2019.
Both, however, are well equipped for Jun. Lu, a New York City native, began his career working at his parents’ Chinese restaurants. After attending the French Culinary Institute, he worked in New York restaurants including Pearl and Ash in the Bowery neighborhood and Llama Inn in Brooklyn. He also was executive chef of a hospitality group whose restaurants included Loosie’s Kitchen, Loosie Rouge, and Etiquette & Sauced. He moved to Houston in 2020 to partner with Garcia in Kin.
After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Garcia worked at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Spice Market in Manhattan, and later at the Singaporean restaurant Masak and the Thai restaurant Kin Shop. A Houston native, she returned home in 2016 and began pop-ups built around her love of Southeast Asian cuisine. Houston foodies also know her from her stint at Decatur Bar & Pop-Up, Kin at Politan Row, and her work with By Kin HTX.
