White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan at a press briefing at the White House in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022.

A terrorist attack at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan killed 13 U.S. service members during the chaotic removal of American troops form the region. It was also followed by a return to power for the Taliban, which captured many remaining American military assets. “Sullivan offered to resign, several colleagues told me,” Ignatius wrote. “Biden insisted he remain, but Afghanistan broke the early comity of his national-security team, creating tensions between Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken that have been well managed by both — especially in comparison with some past administrations — but never disappeared.”

“If true, that would be very different from what many advisers told me for THE INTERNATIONALISTS, which is that no one in admin offered to resign,” Ward, who covers national security, wrote via X.The National News Desk in August she felt slighted by Vice President Kamala Harris in 2021 after she did not attend the dignified transfer of her son’s body at Dover Air Force Base.
