Survivor is one of the all-time great reality TV competition shows, but only a small percentage of players have had historic runs. Twice a year, the CBS favorite kicks off with a new or returning set of castaways all vying for Survivor’s million-dollar prize.
There are dozens of play styles, but a great player knows how to adapt to their circumstances. Whether they’re orchestrating one of Survivor’s best blindsides or working from the bottom to manage their threat level, players become the Sole Survivor by outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting their opponents. Some players have obvious credits, like unforgettable Survivor idol plays, but there are just as many underrated castaways that still deserve the distinction of being considered one of the best. 20 Rob Cesternino Seasons 6, 8 Millions of people recognize Rob Cesternino for his hit podcast, Rob Has a Podcast, dissecting reality television, but long before that, he was a breakout star on Survivor: The Amazon . Cesternino was a true Survivor game-changer, as he helped prove the merits of a strong strategic game. Despite returning for Survivor: All Stars in season 8, Rob Cesternino never had a real second chance to play the game. Regardless of being one of the most clever castaways in Survivor history, Rob’s 0% win rate brings his ranking down. 19 Christian Hubicki Seasons 37, 50 Upon the premiere of Survivor: David vs. Goliath , it felt like certain players on both tribes had zero win equity — including Christian Hubicki, who quickly became the face of the Davids tribe. Against all expectations, however, Christian became one of the most likable Survivor players ever, and the target on his back post-merge grew bigger and bigger each day. He managed to win individual immunity and position himself well in a majority alliance, but Christian’s seventh-place finish was devastating. 18 Domenick Abbate Season 36 Survivor: Ghost Island was divisive for many reasons, but it had a historic Final Tribal Council . Throughout the season, Domenick Abbate and Wendell Holland had one of the most iconic Survivor friendships, practically running the game together. When it came time to vote for a winner, the jury was split — five votes for Domenick, five votes for Wendell, and nobody voted for the third finalist, Laurel Johnson. As such, Laurel cast the sole vote to decide the winner , meaning Domenick was one vote shy of a well-deserved win. 17 Maryanne Oketch Season 42 Without question, Maryanne Oketch is Survivor’s most underrated winner, as many still discredit her game years after her season. Nevertheless, she was the biggest gamer on season 42 despite her bubbly demeanor. Maryanne used her exuberant personality as a way to manage her threat level, but she moved like a snake in the grass to make huge moves. Maryanne concocted the plan to take out her longtime ally and clear frontrunner Omar Zaheer, and she entered Final Tribal Council with a secret immunity idol still in her pocket. Everyone wrote her off until it was time to write her name down on the parchment to give her a memorable win. 16 Spencer Bledsoe Seasons 28, 31 Spencer Bledsoe first played a dominant game on Survivor: Cagayan , but his return on Survivor: Second Chance cemented his legacy. From his impressive challenge performances to his clever strategies and flexible maneuvering within the tribe, Spencer fought tooth and nail to the end of two seasons. While he lost his two games, Spencer is one of the best Survivor players to never win, and his impact on the game's meta can’t be overlooked. 15 Tyson Apostol Seasons 18, 20, 27, 40 Tyson Apostol is one of Survivor’s funniest castaways, but he absolutely dominated Survivor: Blood vs. Water . After his Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains blunder led Tyson to essentially vote himself out, he came back seven seasons later with a vengeance. There were plenty of other contributing factors, like Tyson’s relationship with Rachel Foulger. After she was targeted and eliminated as a slight to Tyson, the lovable goofball took the game more seriously and steamrolled to the end for an indomitable victory. 14 Kelley Wentworth Seasons 29, 31, 38 Undeniably one of the sneakiest Survivor castaways, Kelley Wentworth is remembered as an iconic player of the past 10 years. In Survivor: San Juan Del Sur , Second Chance, and Edge of Extinction , she played a ruthless strategic game that came back to bite her. Wentworth’s best season was irrefutably Edge of Extinction, where she would have run the game to the very end if her wildcard ally, Dan"The Wardog" DaSilva, hadn’t voted her out and blown up his own game in the process. Wentworth was the victim of a flashy move gone wrong, but her strategic gameplay can’t be denied. 13 Kim Spradlin Seasons 24, 40 Throughout Survivor: One World , there was no castaway playing half as hard as Kim Spradlin. After the merge, Kim won individual immunity four times, making her a Survivor challenge beast who paved her own way to the end. Without a doubt, Kim deserved her win, but debates have broken out regarding her season’s equity. The rest of the cast had few players as strong as Kim, making many believe her win was easy, thanks to the lack of any real competition. Nonetheless, Kim single-handedly ran her season and is remembered as one of the greats. 12 Genevieve Mushaluk Seasons 47, 50 During an age where plenty of viewers discredit the 40s entirely, Genevieve Mushaluk proved the New Era doesn’t need to be boring, predictable, or villain-less. Genevieve started Survivor season 47 as a cold-hearted player who kept her cards close to her chest and was prepared to strike whenever necessary. As the season progressed, however, she realized the value of forming close social connections, and Genevieve's adaptability paid off in dividends, as she was the mastermind behind the biggest move of the season — Operation Italy. Her spot on the Survivor 50 cast was well-earned, as she easily could have won her first season. 11 John Cochran Seasons 23, 26 John Cochran played a horrible game his first time around , which makes his dominant win in Survivor: Caramoan all the more impressive. As a Survivor superfan, Cochran intrinsically understood the game mechanics and politics of tribal councils. The latter shined through exceptionally well during the FTC questions, as Cochran told each juror exactly what he knew they wanted to hear. Cochran played a perfect game in Survivor: Caramoan, having zero votes cast for his elimination but a unanimous vote cast for his victory.
