The Toolik Field Station is an Arctic research facility located 370 miles north of Fairbanks. In 2025, Toolik celebrated 50 years of inquiry to help better understand the Arctic and the role it plays in our society.
If you’ve ever driven the haul road past Coldfoot, you may have seen the signs for the Toolik Field Station, just past Galbraith Lake. For more than 50 years, scientists have been braving cold and dark winters, as well as hot and mosquito-filled summers to do field research on a variety of projects, all with the goal of “inspiring an understanding of the Arctic from the ground up.
” The scientists who come to Toolik are pursuing that understanding in a variety of ways in the challenging - and changing - arctic environment. Environmental research technician Mayra Meléndez González performs routine maintenance on autonomous instruments collecting meteorological and atmospheric data near Toolik Field. Lab and residential facilities at Toolik Field Station allow scientists to access research sites next to the station, along the Dalton Highway, and via helicopter.
