A well-known restaurant and lodge in the Matanuska Valley is temporarily closing to repair substantial damage wrought by the high winds over the weekend.

WASILLA, Alaska - A well-known restaurant and lodge in the Matanuska Valley is temporarily closing to repair substantial damage wrought by hurricane-force winds over the weekend.over Dec. 6-8. Images of the lodge show extensive damage to the roof, with wood beams and trusses laying scattered on the top and on the ground level below.

“The front of it took a pretty big pounding,” the owner of Settler’s Bay Lodge, Joshua Broda, said Thursday. Settler’s Bay Lodge was one of numerous businesses and homes impacted by the high winds that blew through the Mat-Su over Dec. 6-8.No injuries were reported amidst the destruction, according to lodge officials. When pieces of the roof began to fly off the roof of Settler’s Bay during the intense winds, Broda believes it led to a domino effect as the debris slammed into vulnerable pieces of equipment that lines the roof. “We lost, I would say, half to at least a third ... of the roof and the shingles and everything,” he said. That includes some architectural ornaments on the roof that Broda said essentially “turns it into a kite, apparently.” Settler’s Bay Lodge was one of numerous businesses and homes impacted by the high winds that blew through the Mat-Su over Dec. 6-8.Luckily, Broda said most of the insulating materials that lay beneath the shingles were spared the destruction. Broda said its too soon to know the full cost of the damage, but did say that the business could be looking at a closure of a “couple months.” Settler’s Bay Lodge was one of numerous businesses and homes impacted by the high winds that blew through the Mat-Su over Dec. 6-8.Overall, Broda said the damage and loss of business for a venue that is well-known in the Mat-Su community, and which hosts hundreds of events each year, could price in at around $500,000 over the months of December and January. The lodge is facing another challenge having to cancel or change plans to accommodate at least 40 Christmas parties scheduled for the venue, Broda said, explaining that many of those customers have had their events moved to Settlers’ sister restaurant, the Chop House. When asked about the challenge in front of him, Broda said his thoughts are not so much with the financial loss, but with the staff and employees affected by the closure. “I know insurance will help us fix the material damages, you know, so that’s sort of just a process that we’re going to have to navigate,” he said. “But really where my heart hurts and my gut sinks is because this is a big time for our staff that all expect that extra boost coming into the Christmas season."FIRST ALERT: Hurricane force winds and extreme snow‘We’re trained to do this’: JBER soldiers come to rescue after car hits pole on Glenn HighwayTwo Spenard businesses are shutting their doors
