Not everyone is satisfied with the delayed explanation of the booms that shocked the Salt Lake Valley on Thursday.
More than four hours after the first mystery booms were heard, the Tooele Army Depot issued a statement.
Cheryle Cunningham, who has lived in Sandy for 20 years, is accustomed to booms from the depot, but said this time was different.Military training detonations cause panic in Utah amid scramble to confirm source“Did my house rattle? Oh yes — pictures, light fixtures, doors, windows,” she said. Like many others, including law enforcement and emergency responders, Cunningham was uncertain about what was happening. The depot acknowledged the detonations surprised people and were frightening, attributing the intensity to increased moisture in the ground and a lack of cloud cover.
“I’m just glad everything is alright, but we don’t want to go through that again,” Cunningham said. “They have to do a little better job.” Army Depot spokesman Wade Matthews apologized that dispatchers got flooded with concerned calls and emergency responders were left scrambling to get answers, but said notifications were sent to surrounding communities — not on social media. He added that the depot would review the incident to see if notification protocols need to be improved.“This was very, very different, very, very intense, and I do hope that they listen to the people,” she said.
