Newly Minted Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt has concessions to the Coalition as it votes on appointing an administrator to the CFMEU, however negotiations on key issues persist.

Newly-minted Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt has made a number of concessions to the Coalition as it looks to vote on an administrator for the CFMEU .

Despite this, Mr Watt said action against the CFMEU is"too urgent to be delayed any further" and will introduce the legislation to the senate at 3pm Thursday. “The government, employer groups and the wider union movement want this legislation dealt with today," he said.“And the Greens seem to be siding with John Setka and bikies rather than vote with the government to get organised crime out of the union."

The Coalition also wants a minimum administration period of three years rather than just the maximum five year period offered by Labor. “Of course, there are certain things that we’re not prepared to agree to but I hope they see reason. Equally I have been in discussions with The Greens and I would hope they can get onboard this legislation as well.”

Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash wants the administrator to issue progress reports to parliament once every three months and appear before a committee, but Mr Watt felt the administrator's independence could be hindered. Outside the role of the administrator, the Coalition demanded the CFMEU be banned from campaigning or making political donations with the union giving $6.2 million to Labor since Prime Minister Anthony Albanese became leader in 2019. “The issue that we have is we don’t think it’s fair on a union’s members to say that they can’t campaign at all on any issue,” he said.
