A member of the House of Representatives warned the public against heavy drinking of alcohol that could lead to major diseases.
Iloilo 1st district Representative Janette Garin, who is also a doctor, said excessive drinking of alcohol can lead to cirrhosis, which is one of the top causes of liver cancer.“Cirrhosis, dala siya ng pag-inom. Kaya nga drink moderately. Yung tamang-tama na puwede mong iihi nang iihi yung alcohol sa katawan mo,” Garin said in a press conference.“Isipin mo na lalo kang papangit 'pag sobra kang iinom kasi nade-dehydrate ka. Mabilis kang magmukhang matanda,” she added.
She stressed the importance of getting a vaccine against Hepatitis B which she said is hyper-endemic or naturally occurring in the Philippines.On Wednesday, the House Committee on Health approved a proposed bill for the creation of the Liver Center of the Philippines.“Nakikita po natin sa datos ngayon na tumataas na ang liver diseases natin dito sa Pilipinas. Siguro karamihan sa atin ay mahihilig sa matatamis, matatabang pagkain, sasamahan pa natin ng inom.
