LP gas can help solve some of South Africa's problems, according to a new government strategy, including too little electricity and too many pollutants in other fuels used to cook and heat.Plans to push LP gas as an alternative include a big television advertising campaign. For more storiesLiquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, should be a much bigger deal in South Africa, according to a brand new government strategy.

"As the number of of people with access to electricity increased, the demand for electrical energy started to increase and this led to the power shortfalls that emphasised the need for SA to diversify its energy mix and in so doing, reduce heavy dependence on electrical energy, especially for cooking and space heating," the LPG strategy says.

The strategy explicitly focuses on households rather than industrial users of gas, or energy more broadly, and considers how the gas value chain should be shaken up from end to end in order to make LPG more accessible. At the one end, South Africa should"consider" importing its gas from Algeria, Nigeria, or Angola, rather than from the Middle East,"in pursuit of the continental development agenda", the strategy holds.
