`Too early to tell if curve flattened’

THE enhanced community quarantine had reduced the “doubling time” of the coronavirus disease 2019 , but not “slow enough” to indicate that the curve had flattened, the Department of Health said on Thursday.

“It’s too early to say if we are flattening the curve. We can only be certain if the doubling time is 30 days and more…and we’re far from that situation,” she said during an online media conference. Special Assistant to the Secretary of Health Beverly Ho recognized that the data on Covid-19 were not as accurate as the Health department wanted it to be, given that the mass testing currently prioritizes health workers, vulnerable population and patients with severe symptoms.

“Even without mass testing, the fact that we are measuring the severe [and] critical population on a daily basis gives us a good picture of the shape of the curve,” he said in a Facebook post. “At a little over 200 cases a day holding steady for the last few days, there is little doubt the ECQ has succeeded in slowing down the spread of Covid-19 in the Philippines.”

To avoid this, he said the public should continue physical distancing and universal mask wearing “in case one is incubating the virus,” schools should stay closed and public gatherings must be banned.
