Victorian drug kingpin Tony Mokbel has suffered a brain injury after being knocked unconscious and stabbed up to seven times in a frenzied assault with a makeshift knife at Barwon Prison
Tony Mokbel and one of his attackers embraced an hour before a near-fatal assault and stabbing with home-made blades inside Barwon Prison that left the drug kingpin with brain injuries.
Teira Bennett was celebrating his 21st birthday in a prison-yard party approved by authorities on February 11 when he briefly embraced Mokbel just before the 53-year-old left the gathering to attend the prison’s visitor centre. But an hour later, at 3.40pm, Mokbel was walking back through the yard to his unit when Bennett and Eldea Teuira, also 21, approached from the opposite direction and attacked without warning, according to documents released by Melbourne Magistrates Court.
Bennett was seen to pull a makeshift weapon from his pants, lift Mokbel and stab him in the upper shoulder area. Bennett and Teuira on Wednesday pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence and recklessly causing injury, the latter over an injury to inmate Steven Logan, 31, who was stabbed in the side trying to help Mokbel.
‘‘It was very likely that without the swift response of emergency interventons, he would have died from the injuries sustained,’’ Ms Churchill’s summary says. After Mokbel was attacked, a prison guard said he heard Bennett yell: ‘‘You’re not an enforcer, this is what you get for talking to the screws, you f---ing dog.’’
