A Toms River restaurant, Aqua Blu Kitchen & Cocktails, has faced backlash for a weekly burger special dedicated to the Proud Boys extremist group. While the restaurant apologized and claimed the name was a 'mistake,' social media posts revealed they previously advertised other menu items with right-leaning political themes. These included the 'Border Czar' and 'Make Fries Great Again' burgers, which were later deleted from their social media pages. Following public criticism, the restaurant terminated the employee responsible for creating the controversial menu items.
A Toms River restaurant under fire for dedicating a weekly burger special to the Proud Boys extremist group previously sold at least two other sandwiches themed around right-leaning politics.plunged Aqua Blu Kitchen & Cocktails into controversy last week when a screenshot of its printed menu was posted on social media by a customer.
But it appears the restaurant previously advertised other menu items related to right-leaning politics before deleting posts about the items from the restaurant’s social media feed. A screenshot of the now-deleted November post was provided to NJ Advance Media. Cached versions of the restaurant’s social media pages confirm the notices about the burgers were previously posted by the restaurant, then taken down.
After declining to comment further by phone, Varriale did not immediately respond to follow-up questions sent via email. In an earlier interview, Varriale denied knowing what a Proud Boy was before the backlash began, saying, “I thought it was, you know, a proud boy.”
