. “…He had some problems while he was at Ole Miss, but sometimes you have to give people a second chance. Now, there will be a short leash, I’m sure, from the administration at Auburn and the people at Auburn. They’re going to expect things from Hugh Freeze that he’s going to have to show, that he’s going to have to give forward to the Auburn family and to the administration.
He resigned at Ole Miss in July 2017 amid professional and personal issues after Rebels administrators became aware of a concerning pattern of behavior during his time in Oxford, Miss., stemming from the NCAA’s investigation into the program and a subsequent lawsuit filed by former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. A couple months after his resignation, ESPN reported that Freeze made more than a dozen phone calls to an escort service from his university-issues phone over a 33-month period.
Freeze’s issues kept him out of coaching for a couple of seasons before he resurfaced at Liberty in late 2018. He spent four years with the Flames, winning at least eight games each season, including a 10-win campaign and No. 17 finish in the AP poll in 2020. Controversy resurfaced in July, when he sent unsolicited direct messages to a former Liberty student who has been an outspoken critic of the university’s leadership.
