Sharks, Tomas Hertl still trying to hammer out agreement on new deal
With the NHL trade deadline less than three weeks away, forward Tomas Hertl said his agent and the Sharks have talked more about a contract extension of late and described the negotiations between the two sides as being more positive than negative.
Hertl said last month that he was open to staying with the Sharks past this season, but wanted a long-term deal. Assistant general manager Joe Will said at the time that the Sharks wanted to keep Hertl in teal. Hertl, 28, is in the final season of a four-year, $22.5 million deal he signed with the Sharks in July 2018 and would become an unrestricted free agent in July if he remains without a contract.
However, if there is no agreement by the two sides by the deadline, the Sharks would risk losing Hertl – one of the franchise’s leading scorers since he first came to San Jose in 2013 – for nothing on the open market.
