Mafia-Wars---Tom-Welling-Interview

WARNING: This interview includes SPOILERS from Mafia Wars.Mafia Wars star Tom Welling shares the new experiences of playing Terry Jacobs and what it would take to get Smallville to come back. From playing Clark Kent for a whole decade on Smallville to portraying Cain on Lucifer, Welling's latest role is a very different gig in the new movie Mafia Wars.

In Mafia Wars, the story follows Terry Jacobs, who has just been released early from prison, as his newly found freedom comes to a fast end. Forced to now go undercover in a team of six, things go very south for Terry quickly while trying to get back to his family. Mafia Wars was directed and written by Scott Windhauser, and also stars Cher Cosenza and Cam Gigandet as Griff and Spinx, respectively. 1:48 Related Tom Welling Stares Death In The Face In New Clip From Mafia Wars Exclusive: Screen Rant presents a clip from Mafia Wars which sees Tom Welling’s Terry try to maintain his composure when threatened by a mob boss. 2 Screen Rant interviewed Welling to get into the layers of Mafia Wars, and the experiences that came with playing Terry, a different role from Welling's past gigs. Welling opened up about what Mafia Wars added to his toolbox as an actor and the environment created by filmmaker Scott Windhauser. Welling also provided a new update on where he is with the Smallville animated sequel show and his thoughts on James Gunn's DC Universe. Tom Welling Breaks Down The Journey Of Mafia Wars "He couldn't just overpower anyone in any scene because of his circumstances." Close Screen Rant: You always take on such different roles from everything you do. As someone who's done a lot of action in the past, what did Mafia Wars add to your action experience as an actor? Tom Welling: I think the fact that he couldn't just overpower anyone in any scene because of his circumstances. I really liked that, even though he wanted to, especially with Griff being such a psychopath, he kind of just wanted to grab him and punch him in the face a lot of times. But he's got a bigger agenda, which I liked and then he's sort of always waiting to pounce, that's what I liked about this guy. Tom Welling On Playing The Morally Grey Arc In Mafia Wars Something that I found very appealing with Terry was that he seems like a very morally great character of someone who had to make a lot of tough choices to survive. Was that something that was very appealing for you taking on this role? Tom Welling: Yeah, I think that Terry cared more about other people than he cared about himself, and that's what I liked about the character. I think he cared about his own survival in order to help other people, and it was real survival. It wasn't superhero survival. He could die, he's really in the trenches. Tom Welling On The Creative Environment Of Mafia Wars He was always pointing out that, 'Oh, don't point a gun at me,' and I'm thinking, 'Oh my God, are they foreshadowing that he's going to die?' but thankfully he made it out. You have a lot of great scenes with Cher Cosenza and Cam Gigandet. How was it working with those two, because these are very different dynamics. Tom Welling: They're both great. Scott Windhauser, who wrote and directed this, he did a fantastic job of creating an environment because it was so chaotic shooting in Rome itself. Scott took all that on himself, so when the camera was rolling, we had a really great environment to just do the scenes, or not just do the scenes, but to be creative in the scenes. I think he allowed us to trust each other to do different things, especially Cam. I never knew what Cam was going to do - in the best way - he had his own method, which I loved it because it worked for Terry, because Terry didn't know what he was going to do at any moment. It was just a great environment, but it all really trickles down from Scott, because he created it. Tom Welling On The Potential For Mafia Wars 2 The story is very open-ended. Could there be more Mafia Wars? If Mafia Wars 2 were to happen, what kind of scenario would you want to see Terry in next? I love that he got to be united with his little niece, but of course, what new challenge could wait for him? Tom Welling: I think the thing is, number one: I would love to play Terry again. In what situation? I don't know, but what I love about the character is it could be anything. It really could and that's up to Scott. I've been bugging him probably more than he wants, asking him that question, because we shot this a couple years ago, and it's finally coming out. I think based on maybe the reaction of the film, we can maybe get another one in, because Terry's fun to play, and I think he can travel, if that makes any sense. The character can go anywhere. Tom Welling Gives Smallville Sequel TV Show Update & Thoughts On James Gunn's DC Universe "We need Warner Brothers and DC to let us do it." When I talked to your good buddy, Michael Rosenbaum, I asked a lot about this Smallville sequel show you're trying to work on. Do you have any updates on that in terms of trying to approach James Gunn and bring it to life finally or where are we at right now with it? Tom Welling: I'll tell you where it's at: We need Warner Brothers and DC to let us do it. We've got Al and Miles who are very busy doing a TV show called Wednesday. But they created Smallville, they want to write it. We just need to go ahead from DC and and Warner Brothers. So if you know anybody over there...because, listen, this is a passion project. It's not going to be a blockbuster, it's for the fans. All the actors want to do the voices of the characters - we're all in. We just need them to let us use the property. Are you excited to see what James Gunn is doing with his new DC Universe? Have you been paying any attention to that? Tom Welling: I see things online about it. I'm excited to see what happens. Michael's actually a good buddy of his, and they talk all the time. We always joke that, or Michael always jokes that James hasn't really hired him for more than anything that covers his face, which is kind of a funny joke! But I watch all of it, dude. I watched the DC stuff. I watched the Marvel stuff, I'm a junkie for it!
