Acquired from the Yankees in Juan Soto trade, Kyle Higashioka returned strong value on a $2.18 million salary
It’s not standard practice for a playoff-contending baseball team to have a 34-year-old platoon catcher soak up as many innings as Kyle Higashioka did down the stretch.
He still hit five homers in the 30 games. Best of all, his defense held up, assisting the pitching staff’s strong finish. Defensively, he caught all but two innings. Twice, he made a difficult catch of an infielder’s one-hop throw to secure a crucial out. Higashioka finished one run above average, per Baseball Info Solutions and Baseball-Reference.com. Campusano ended up at minus-17.
Willing to crowd the plate against some pitcher, he turned on fastballs at a high rate, enabling him to double his career ratio of home runs to flyballs and amass a career-high 17 home runs plus the three long balls in the offseason.
