Hundreds of Black women and non-binary actors — including Lashana Lynch, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Sheila Atim — have signed an open letter condemning racist online backlash against Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, an actor who is costarring opposite Tom Holland in the new production of 'Romeo & Juliet' in London.
Francesca Amewudah-Rivers — who costars with Tom Holland in 'Romeo & Juliet' in London — has faced racist backlash online since her casting was announced, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Sheila Atim, among others, on April 10.
"We want to send a clear message to Francesca and all Black women performers who face this kind of abuse - WE see you," the statement reads. "We see the art you manage to produce with not only the pressures that your white colleagues face but with the added traumatic hurdle of misogynoir. Those that came before you are by your side.
