Spider-Man star Tom Holland reveals his battle with alcohol addiction, how he quit drinking, and why he created his own non-alcoholic beer brand Bero.
Tom Holland , the 30-year-old actor best known for playing Spider-Man, has opened up about his struggle with alcohol addiction , describing sobriety as the toughest challenge of his life.
In a candid interview with GQ magazine, Holland revealed that at the height of his addiction, he would drink his entire hotel minibar in one night, often going to work the next day with no one aware of his secret. He admitted that he couldn't put alcohol down and that his drinking was affecting every aspect of his life—his professional career, personal relationships, and health.
Something had to give, he said on the Good Hang podcast, acknowledging that he realized he had a problem. Holland described how his version of wild was very un-Hollywood; he wasn't the nightclub-going type but would instead sit alone in his hotel room and finish a minibar, then show up for work the next day. He always considered himself sensible, but he just drank too much.
The realization came when he understood that alcohol was taking control of his life, and he felt enslaved to the drink. Back in 2023, Holland said it got to the point where all he could think about was having a drink, and it really scared him. After attempting Dry January in 2022, the actor decided to go completely sober. He said it was affecting his professional life, personal life, and health, so he decided to pack it in.
Getting through that first year was the toughest challenge he had ever been on. Holland now looks back on that period with a mix of gratitude and determination, having successfully maintained his sobriety. Determined to find alternatives that would allow him to socialize without feeling left out, Holland noticed there were limited options for people like him who wanted something that would scratch the itch of drinking but without the alcohol.
He wanted to be part of the social experience at bars and parties without being the only person with a lemonade. This inspired him to launch his own premium non-alcoholic beer brand called Bero in 2024. The brand offers a range of shandies that are 70 percent lemonade and 30 percent Bero, Holland's non-alcoholic beer mix. The idea behind the shandies was to create something authentic that his partner, actress Zendaya, could also enjoy.
Zendaya, who has never been a drinker and fully supports Holland's journey, didn't initially like the taste of beer. Holland said she is incredibly proud of Bero, but there was a missing link because she didn't enjoy the stuff he was trying to sell. So the shandies were designed to bridge that gap, offering a refreshing and flavorful option that both he and his loved ones could appreciate.
Holland emphasized that Zendaya has never been a drinker, and she inspired him to create a product that would appeal to everyone, regardless of their relationship with alcohol. Holland also spoke warmly about his relationship with Zendaya, praising her as fearless and the best actor going. He said he couldn't imagine doing what he does without her, and her support has been crucial to his recovery and entrepreneurial ventures.
The actor's journey from addiction to sobriety and entrepreneurship has been a transformative one. He now advocates for a balanced lifestyle and hopes that Bero can provide a healthy alternative for those looking to reduce their alcohol intake. Holland's story serves as an inspiration to many, showing that it's possible to overcome addiction and turn a personal struggle into a positive force for change.
By creating a brand that prioritizes inclusivity and social connection without alcohol, Holland is helping to reshape the drinking culture. His openness about his struggles has also encouraged others to speak up about their own battles with addiction, breaking the stigma surrounding sobriety. With his new venture, Holland is not only building a business but also fostering a community of like-minded individuals who value health, wellness, and genuine human connection.
The launch of Bero marks a new chapter in his life, one where he has taken control and turned his challenges into opportunities
