"Leo knows all" is what Tom Hardy got tattooed on his body after he earned his first-ever Oscar nomination, for his performance in The Revenant. Hardy was skeptical, but his illustrious co-star Leonardo DiCaprio was certain.
DiCaprio himself went on to win his first Oscar for his performance in the epic Western directed by Alejandro G. Iñarritu. The movie was released during a particularly successful streak for the star — in the 2010s, he also appeared in Inception, Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. These movies have grossed around $3 billion at the worldwide box office. The Revenant was the second-most successful of the lot and was recently re-released in domestic theaters in celebration of its 10th anniversary. This happened to coincide with DiCaprio's Oscar campaign for Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, which recently won in six categories, including Best Picture. The buzz, however, didn't translate into meaningful attention for The Revenant, which has had a relatively unremarkable re-release run. The movie was nominated in 12 categories at the 88th Academy Awards; in addition to DiCaprio's historic win, Iñarritu won his second Best Director honor in a row, while Emmanuel Lubezki won his third consecutive Best Cinematography award. The movie grossed more than $530 million worldwide against a reported budget of $135 million; it was initially green-lit on a reported $90 million budget. It's still technically a wide release, with a domestic theater count of 900. But its per-theater average this past weekend was a rather weak $166. Also starring Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, The Revenant was based on the true story of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who was left for dead by his gang but survived to exact vengeance. The movie's events take place in 1823, six decades before Taylor Sheridan's 1883. It holds a"Certified Fresh" 78% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads,"As starkly beautiful as it is harshly uncompromising, The Revenant uses Leonardo DiCaprio's committed performance as fuel for an absorbing drama that offers punishing challenges — and rich rewards."
